Dermaplaning

What is a Dermaplane?

Dermaplane is a simple skin-resurfacing treatment that reveals glowing, youthful skin. It works by using a specialized blade to remove vellus hair (also known as peach fuzz) and dead skin cells that have accumulated on the surface of the skin. Our procedure here at Skin Ritualist is to prepare the skin, perform dermaplaning, then use an enzyme peel which will deliver vitamins back into the skin.

How does dermaplaning work?

To prepare, our esthetician makes sure the skin is cleansed so that dead skin cells are loosened well enough for the dermaplaning process. The skin is dried completely and is ready for the procedure.

A scalpel-like sterile blade is used on the face by making short, precise motions that are against the grain of the skin hair. Once the dermaplaning is finished, the skin is now free from excess oil and dirt. The next step is to apply a nutrient-rich enzyme peel so that its vitamins are absorbed quickly into the skin.

We then steam the face to perform an extraction process where whiteheads and blackheads are removed, unclogging your pores to reveal completely new and healthier skin. The dermaplaning procedure is finished off with an oxygen mask for an effectively refreshed and brightened appearance as it hydrates and rejuvenates the skin.

Is dermaplaning the same as shaving?

While they are similar in the act, shaving the face with a regular blade can remove peach fuzz and achieve exfoliation but professional dermaplaning has added benefits only skin specialists can administer. Skin therapists like estheticians and dermatologists are properly trained to perform safe and sterile procedures and can cleanse deeper into the epidermis with extraction tools designed for precision.

Is dermaplaning good for my acne?

It’s good to note that this procedure is not meant to get rid of nor remedy active, pustular, or cystic acne. Generally, it is best to try this exfoliating procedure when the skin is not suffering from active acne. Dermaplaning does kill bacteria, resulting in fewer acne breakouts, and it can also fade blemishes caused by acne, helping to even out the skin tone. If you’re using acne-fighting facial products, you’ll be happy to know that dermaplaning will create a clean canvas so your skin may better absorb the ingredients.

Is this safe for dark skin?

Dermaplaning is one of the gentlest, safest, and non-abrasive ways to exfoliate darker skin types– since it clears the dull, gray look that facial hair and dead skin cells can cause and involves no harsh chemicals– revealing the skin’s beautiful, true tone underneath.

How long does it take for my skin to heal from a dermaplane procedure?

There is no downtime! Our estheticians at Skin Ritualist will always give you directions for specific post-treatment care but generally, you’ll want to make sure to protect your skin by applying sunscreen regularly, avoiding direct sun exposure, and moisturizing.

How long will the effects of dermaplaning last?

The effects can typically last up to 3-4 weeks.

How often should I do dermaplaning?

Since the body sheds old skin cells every 28 days, you can set up your dermaplane appointment every 4 weeks.
